Patrick & James, c. 1850?
As in the possible emigration photo of Mary Coogan, a family member accompanied the emigrant to the port city which, for people leaving County Carlow, was often Waterford. Before the ship sailed, they would visit a photography studio for an image of the departing relative, who was about to embark on a hazardous sea voyage. This image is likely an emigration photograph of Patrick (standing) with his brother James (seated). Patrick would have been about 28 years old in 1851, and James would have been 21.
Notice that the drapery to the left in the image is similar to that in another likely emigration photo, possibly of their sister Catherine, who left Ireland at age 29 with her brother Mathew, age 24, in 1863. And there is a later photo of James with William, c. 1868, probably taken during William's first visit to James' home in Illinois.
