The manifest of the ship
City of Manchester, arriving in the Port of New York on May 14, 1867, listed
Catherine Cogan, age 60, and Hugh Cogan, 40. The next name listed on the manifest is "Mary Mevy? [age]17 [gender] F[emale] [Occupation] Spinster." The listing "
Mary Mevy?" [transcriber's question mark] is most likely a spelling error for
Mary Meany, who was probably born about 1850. According to the ship's record, these three passengers embarked in Ireland (Immigrant Ship Transcribers). Michael Coogan's letter of August 7, 1867 indicates that by his mother's "letter of the 23rd," he had heard of her safe arrival in New York with his brother Hugh and his niece Mary Meany.
The guess that the image on the far left is Catharine Nolan Coogan and her son Hugh's emigration photo is based on similarities to younger images in
the family group photo, cropped here to the image of the mother and youngest school-aged son, from a quarter-century earlier.
